The Hague is the third largest city in the Netherlands and is the home for the most foreign embassies in the Netherlands. 150 international organisations are located in the city, including the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, which makes The Hague one of the major cities hosting the United Nations.

Schilderswijk is one of the poorest neighborhoods in The Netherlands, with high unemployment and 70% of inhabitants living on very low income. More than 90% of the registered residents are of non-western origin – notably Turkish, Moroccan and Surinamese. Whilst living in The Hague I noticed the vivid amalgamation of very high standard of living and a very functioning society, coexisting with pockets of social deprivation and fragmentation. The duality of seeming integration amidst the evident segregation.

Walking around meeting and talking to strangers in this area I got to meet some of the most interesting people I’ve ever had the pleasure to, with fascinating stories of strength and turmoil in immigrating in search for a better life.

Chad Alexander successfully applied for a Graduate Artist in Residence position in Ulster University after graduating with a 1st Class BA Hons degree in Photography. He has continued to develop his practice over the year, along with working towards an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Authority.
The work exhibited was made in the Netherlands, where he spent time in various locations. Take Me Somewhere Nice is his response to the contracts between a society with areas of a ‘very high standard of living…coexisting with pockets of social deprivation’.
